Title: Legal Documents Enable Scientific Discovery

Author: Harris, Sian Article Type: Product Analysis

Although patents are legal documents, with data mining scientists can use patents for pharmaceutical research. For example, the Prous Institute's BioEpisteme data mining technology evaluates the likelihood that a given molecule will behave in certain ways. The results can help scientists identify the more promising avenues for research. However, the nature of patent data poses several hurdles in finding valuable scientific information in them. One of the first is a lack of standardization in patent nomenclature. While patent numbers typically comprise a country code, a year, and then a kind code, the different parts can have varying numbers of digits, and even the separators between the parts can differ. In addition, there is no standardization for diseases or target names, and no indexing. This makes extracting information from patents very difficult. At the recent IPI-ConfEx meeting in Seville, Spain, Pfizer's David Walsh called on vendors to adopt data standards that would make integrating the results of database searches less time-consuming. Also helpful would be making the sources of patent information as comprehensive as possible. Christine Emmerich demonstrated at the IPI-ConfEx meeting the inconsistency of existing databases and the need for searching a combination of them.
