Title: Can Open Source Database MySQL Find Love Under Sun?

MySQL, the open source database company bought out by Sun Microsystems in January 2008, said it is primed to continue its effective competition with Oracle, IMB DB2 and its open source database rivals. Marten Mickos, former CEO of MySQL AB and now senior VP of Suns database group, is confident that MySQLs connection with Sun will boost its adoption among large enterprises that are shifting their businesses over to the Internet. The database vendor currently commands only a small share of the $15 billion-a-year database market. Mickos acknowledges that to compete in the large-enterprise market, MySQL must provide more scalability and performance, but he observes that Sun has a lot of expertise in scalability. Suns purchase of MySQL opens the door to thousands of customers who may first use the database for free, and then upgrade to other integrated products and support. Mickos assured attendees of the 2008 MySQL Conference and Expo that despite the purchase by Sun, MySQLs engineers and leadership will continue intact. He also announced that MySQL v5.1 is set to be released in June 2008, or two months later than planned, to allow its developers to find and fix more bugs and avoid the problems of the 5.0 release in 2006. The premature release forced developers and community members to clean up 997 bugs in 2007, and another 380 in 2008.
