Title: Cable Killer

Philip Wiser and Buno Pati are poised to upset business as usual for the nation's satellite and cable television giants. Their idea, conjured up in 2006, is set to turn on in 2008. Called the Sezmi network, it is a radical broadcast system that uses slices of the radio spectrum to deliver programming signals which are grabbed from the air via its set-top box. Wiser and Pati claim that Sezmi will deliver shows for half of what consumers now pay for cable and satellite and their goal is to make cable or satellite boxes obsolete. This newest attempt at an over-the-air video system first required slices of radio spectrum, so Pati negotiated subleases with television station owners for their spare wireless capacity. Meanwhile, Wiser talked with networks and convinced them to sell Sezmi their shows for the same fee that cable and satellite companies pay for each subscriber per month. Sezmi's system is based on the fact that even though 500 channels might be offered, in reality, only a handful of channels are watched with any regularity. It is those two dozen or so shows that are in the highest demand that Sezmi will be able to offer on demand through the airwaves. Other shows are broadcast during downtimes, in the middle of the night for example, and can be recorded later at a customer's choosing. Really obscure content will be available via the Internet for downloads.
