A young VOIP company, VOIPshield Systems, has been looking to separate themselves from the rest of the VOIP security provider pack by publicizing their first database of vulnerabilities specific to IP PBXes. These include the IP PBXes of market leaders, namely Cisco Systems, Avaya and Nortel Networks. This development is worth noting because it is the first time that a research lab will perform tests and sit down to really identify and establish what some of the vulnerabilities are in such systems. These results will be announced under the terms of VOIPshield System's responsible disclosure policy. The vendors received the information first and the company offered to work with the vendors in order to address and resolve some of the issues that came up within the tests. The company found 144 vulnerabilities across Cisco Systems, Avaya and Nortel Networks products. The four categories of these vulnerabilities include denial of service, unauthorized access, information harvesting, and code execution. VOIPshield System's database ranks each of the categories on the severity of the security threat as being critical, high, moderate or low. As VOIP is still new, there are a relatively few clusters of hackers that are trying to break in to these systems. The services offered by VOIPshield Systems are intended as a wakeup call for both the vendors and their clients in order to help protect clients against more determined hackers in the future.
