Title: SAP Announcement Signals Shift

The recent naming of Leo Apotheker as the Co-CEO of SAP signals much more than just a new shift in management, but also a shift in where the business will be heading in 2009. The company's business plans seem to be making a shift from its previous efforts toward making large investments in new software products and investing in acquisitions of companies set to profit from these new products. SAP was also previously predicted to appoint a number of new executives to the supervisory board of SAP. Instead, Apotheker's appointment, although being seen as the best decision, is particularly indicative of the focus moving from software development to sales and customer service. SAP is currently the world's largest business application company, as defined by revenue, and the company is known for their expertise when it comes to software engineering. Contrary to the approach that was being taken by SAP, rivals like Oracle have been working on growing their company's revenue purely through acquisition. There are still other spectators who believe that there will not be much of a shift in SAP's strategy despite the appointment of Apotheker. These people believe that SAP has been, and will likely continue to be, focusing the company's efforts on their Business ByDesign platform.
