The term 'supply chain' has one inherent but persistent flaw: that a break in the chain would bring the entirety of the business-to-business systems to an immediate halt, a halt that is off putting and unaffordable to most manufacturers. Business-to-business models introduced in the 1990's were created using electronic data interchange and are considered to be similarly tainted. The current models that are emerging no longer resemble the supply chain and instead resemble a partner network. The foundation of the model is based on the concept of the network and the premise that companies will be able to share a business makeup and increased communication. Previous systems have typically functioned as message-only services, which pale in comparison to the systems that are being created today. Different levels of services are being created. Companies like GXS and Inovis are remaining simple in their offerings, while other companies, such as Kinaxis and i2, are offering more complex services and offers. Simple information exchange is developed further to include messaging and additional applications intended to allow users to organize and manage data and take action when necessary. However, in order to work, these new models and concepts will need manufacturers to implement processes that model the business. For their part, manufacturers are beginning to realize the value of these new services.
