Title: Java in a Multidevice World

An open source project, designated Equinox and run by Eclipse, is in the midst of acquiring a new and more exciting runtime environment. This would allow an easier development when it comes to writing a Java based application that could run equally well across personal computers, servers, mobile devices and other technologies and products. The goal of Equinox is to create a lightweight runtime that would be capable of executing such programs as those developed by Java and Ajax, thus making them more appealing for various Web 2.0 applications and development projects. One of the biggest backers of Eclipse and the Equinox project would be the mega-company IBM. This support allows Eclipse to compete with some of the biggest names in the business, including Microsoft. However, it is not just their backing that needs to be strong if Eclipse is going to be able to succeed with their Equinox project. They will also need a strong community of developers. Right now, it is believed that there are only scattered projects available to create runtime environments around the Equinox product, but each has a different purpose. Over time it is possible that this may develop into a very strong technological advancement. Some of the existing project foundations that are currently in existence include Rienna and the Eclipse Rich Client, which help to expand the appeal of the Equinox program among the general public.
