WinMagic's SecureDoc encryption protection products could protect top-secret agency information, Social Security data and nuclear secrets threatened by lost or stolen laptops. The products are offered in an Enterprise Server Edition and a Client Edition. The Server program is simple to install. Policies are set for user permissions and devices, a process which often requires converting the client's entire drive from unencrypted format to encrypted. RSA Security's Public-Key Cryptographic Standard #11 protocol, for example, converts data at a rate of about 25G per hour. Throughout the process, a company's staff can continue with their work. Computers can be shut down and power can be interrupted without stopping or harming the conversion process. Once encrypted, administrators control the security process. Client devices can require as many as three pre-boot authentication factors, such as password plus biometric scan plus smart card, before access will be allowed to encrypted resources. Removable media access can be restricted, but the Enterprise Server Edition also supports floppy, Zip, Jaz and USB key drives, which can be encrypted and configured to copy some data and tag other data as read-only. With the administration software, rules can be applied to an entire network, to user groups or to individual users. Systems can be locked down if their network connection is lost, or an incorrect password is submitted too many times. A small drawback is that SecureDoc presents so many options, it could take five days to implement an agency-wide security and encryption program. However, the program provides an option to assign sub-administrators to control group access and security. In addition, classes are offered on software implementation for large companies.
