Although Facebook was originally designed to help college students coordinate their busy social lives, more than half of the 67 million users are people who are out of college, with the fastest growing demographic being those 25 years and older. These older users visit the website for various reasons, including curiosity and professional reasons. One group that is going to the site in droves is journalists. Although students in journalism schools make up some of this population, working journalists in the public sector are increasingly the ranks daily. Journalists and Facebook, a group started by Pat Walters in 2007, is the largest group on the site with 7,000 members. Walters' aim in starting the group was to broaden the scope of resources, which has arguably been achieved, and the amount of information available will grow as more journalists join. Another group that is using Facebook for professional purposes is librarians. The three largest groups in this category have more than 10,000 members, the largest being Librarians and Facebook. In all cases, a member must be committed to the site by maintaining an active presence. Facebook has given journalists, librarians and other professionals a way to connect with colleagues and establish career and educational opportunities.
