There are still technical and cultural challenges that must be resolved before organizations can adopt virtual environments on a large scale. A well-known virtual world is Linden Research's Second Life, a 3D environment that lets users play and conduct business. Organizations like I-95 Corridor Coalition, accounting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers and healthcare technology vendor Greenleaf Medical have been experimenting with virtual worlds as a collaborative tool for various purposes from conducting trial exercises to holding therapy sessions with troubled teens. Virtual worlds, according to industry analysts and developers, are likely to succeed where teleconferencing and other collaborative technologies have fallen short of expectations because they are an interactive environment that allows collaborators to interact socially. There is a certain informality to virtual worlds that could motivate participants to interact. Still, there are pitfalls to virtual worlds. The technology usually does not provide robust audio functionalities required for effective communications among business participants. A high-performance desktop is also needed for fast operation. Users also need to be familiar with communicating/interacting as their virtual selves. Lastly, older users to whom richly rendered video games are unknown must be taught how to operate and function in a virtual world.
