Title: Keeping Younger Kids Safe on the Internet

The nonprofit WiredSafety.org runs programs Teen Angels and Tween Angels to educate kids about how to stay safe online, and how to avoid cyber bullying or having an email account accessed and used for malicious purposes. The organization is training more than 600 kids across the globe how to block bullies, keep their passwords safe, and avoid escalating conflicts online. Kids are encouraged to tell a trusted adult about any online bullying. After completing training and earning their wings, the kids will speak in their local communities about what they have learned. The hope is that children will be more effective ambassadors to other children than adults are. The children may also assist and advise entrepreneurs and law enforcement about kids' perspectives on the use and abuse of technology. Much of the attention on Internet security has been focused on teens using social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, including the formation of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force in January. Younger children now spend enough time online to face similar threats. For example, 4.7 million self-proclaimed tweens visited New Horizon Interactive's Club Penguin in February.
