Autonomic computers that can diagnose, heal, and manage themselves may play a key role in the future of business. Georgia Tech University, Ohio State University, IBM Corp. and researchers in Austin, Texas, and Raleigh, North Carolina announced a partnership that will work to advance autonomic computing in March. The researchers will employ cloud-computing initiatives that utilize many computers in different locations, working together to solve problems. The Internet is utilized to split the workload between many data centers, though tracking which computers are handling which tasks can be overwhelming. Autonomic computing may aid with this challenge. For instance, researchers hope to develop data centers that can automatically sense a spike in traffic and call in more computing power to deal with the increased workload, or computers that can shift work around automatically to increase energy efficiency, saving companies money. Google Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Amazon.com Inc. and many other companies have all begun cloud-computing initiatives. Meanwhile, Georgia, Ohio and Texas have all become popular locations for back office data centers. The partnership will link data centers, creating a testing ground for autonomic computing.
