At Microsoft's Office System Developer conference in February, officials introduced a large amount of Office developer-centric news and technology. Microsoft Office is beginning to look like a developer platform. Outgoing chairman Bill Gates announced the release of Office's FedEx solution QuickShip in its Live Small Business Winter '08 edition, as well as Office Business Application (OBA) sample kits for connectivity with SAP and Oracle's PeopleSoft data sources. Also announced were Visual Studio Extensions 1.1 for Windows SharePoint Services, the release to manufacturing (RTM) of the BizTalk Adapter Pack, and a new financial services OBA component library. In addition, the winners were announced for the all-night-coding contest series and for the OBA of the year. The Office Live Small Business Winter '08 release, based on Office and Windows Live client technologies with SharePoint at the core and connections, provides the opportunity for developers to service over half a million small businesses. The update is free with add-on services for sale. QuickShip will launch and manage FedEx shipments from Microsoft Outlook, as well as print. The IT manager of FedEx Integration Services stated that FedEx Developer Resource Center has web services and plug-ins available for developers to integrate into their software programs, websites or other environment. FedEx uses Visual Studios 2005 and 2008, and relies on Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so customers won't 'have to leave the applications they're working' with. Microsoft is thrilled with such a good example of software delivery via a service model for a 'real-world' business service.
