Because IP networks contain no central brain, they have been very resilient until many startup and existing companies have recently begun to work at tampering with the IP networks in order to make them understand and process data. Intelligence would go back and forth from the network to the server. Many companies are afraid that this type of tampering would necessitate higher costs, and many try to figure out if these costs and potential lockins be worthwhile in exchange for faster and more flexible networks. Some of the most active companies in this field include Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Microsoft and many startup companies who are trying to get into the market at their ideal time. Each of the three power figure companies have worked in their own way to emphasize the power of smarter networks. Cisco has zeroed in on networking memory and CPUs, while Juniper is offering an API that third party companies and clients can access. 3Com has partnered up with VMware in order to try to add virtualization to their networks. Smaller companies such as Arch Rock could upset the balance of power that the larger companies are working towards establishing for smarter networks. While the new network vision may be exciting and compelling, there are other ideas and concepts to consider before getting caught up in the publicity storm of the smarter networks.
