Wal-Mart is intent on helping to usher in the new ear of health records, specifically the idea of re-branding many of the clinics that already exist in the Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart and RediClinic have partnered up and signed a letter of intent explaining their goals and ambitions. Wal-Mart has been working to roll out tens of thousands of beneficial e-health records for their employees and applicable dependents. This requires a software product that is capable of being used for patients who are going to the in-store clinics that Wal-Mart is looking to launch in a more full-scale manner. The clinics, in addition to being dependent upon the correct e-health record software, will also need to utilize decision support tools. MinuteClinic is a walk-in clinic that Wal-Mart will likely replicate in order to achieve success. By the year 2014, Wal-Mart hopes to expand the number of clinics that they are responsible for from approximately the fifty-five that exist now to the high and ambitious number of more than 2,000. Clinics will need to use software such as the private e-health record software from vendor eClinicalWorks. The American Medical Association has set forth federal guidelines that require such clinics to utilize e-health record systems. Currently, about 700 clinics use these e-health record systems, though the number could grow quickly to 1,500 by the end of the year 2008.
