Long-standing norms within the entertainment industry have been turned on their head and traditional lines of thinking are falling by the wayside, according to NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker speaking at the National Association of Television Program Executives Mobile event in Las Vegas. Zucker mentioned major changes at NBC in order to make it through this tumultuous time, including embracing new distribution platforms in online and mobile. Mobile video and television are emerging markets and all parties are at the beginning of the learning curve. A problem with the mobile-phone industry as it stands now, at least for entertainment companies, is that the entertainment companies, like NBC, typically get only a 10 percent cut of the revenue from carriers. The market needs to grow quite a bit before it reaches any successful scale, and many new improvements and features are yet to come. However, mobile video is definitely creeping along with 9.2 million Americans watching some sort of mobile video in 2007. NBC's top performing category in mobile has consistently been news, with comedy and entertainment making a showing as well.
