Title: Juniper Says the Switch is On

Juniper Networks unveiled its new EX line of stackable switches in January, 2008 with claims it was going head to head with Cisco in the $18 billion local area network (LAN) switching market. Cisco currently commands 72 percent of the market, but CEO Scott Kriens and company founder Pradeep Sindu believe that Juniper can leverage its past successes in high-performance routing to erode away Cisco's dominance. All of Juniper's switches, from a high-end switch that supports 128 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports to low-end fixed-configuration stackables, are built around the same Juniper Network Operating System (JUNOS). Because of this, customers should expect to get consistent manageability and performance end-to-end. The EX line appears to be a technologically credible offering, with claims by Juniper that its 16-slot EX 8216 switch has twice the processing performance as Cisco's new Nexus 7000 series. Even still, Cisco already has an enormous installed base that Juniper will have to build, and Cisco still commands three quarters of the enterprise router market. Juniper's new partnerships with vendors IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle, along with a focus on sophisticated technologies and open networks, may help Juniper give Cisco a run for its money.
