MIT researchers have been conducting a census of millions of New Yorkers phone and Internet links to other communities from the local to the international. Called the New York Talk Exchange project, data generated from the census will be part of a new exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art titled 'Design and the Elastic Mind,' which looks at how technology is being employed by designers to change our lives. The information is being provided by AT&T, which stressed that no data is being collected on individuals and no conversations or interactions are being recorded. Instead, researchers are looking for larger patterns. Theyve found, for instance, that primarily those on the top and the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder talk internationally. Researchers are looking to gain a picture of human migration, or a snapshot of globalization. Connections between individual neighborhoods and regions of the globe mirror the ethnic make-up of the areas, and graphs of the data make these connections visible. Among the study's findings are that London is the most-called city from Manhattan, while the second most called is Santo Domingo in the Dominican republic. International calling surges after the Stock Market opens each morning.
