The author analyzes several devices and services that can enhance or worsen our current lifestyle because we are now a mobilized society in the midst of a technological explosion of devices that make connections between hiders and seekers always available from anywhere to anywhere. Telecommuting dates back to the 1970s when online systems and time-sharing services supported terminal access over public and private telephone lines. This long- distance working mode has now advanced to web commuting in the 21st century. Data processing that is continuously on and always available has become the anticipated standard throughout the majority of large and small commercial enterprises. A September 2007 survey by Citrix Online, titled Web Commuting & The American Workforce, revealed the following: small business owners are more likely than workers overall to conduct business away from a traditional workplace--50 percent frequently and 25 percent always; 23 percent of American workers and 41 percent of small business owners regularly work from home or another off- site location, relying on web technology; 64 percent to 75 percent of small business owners believed that the Internet would play a critical role if they were allowed to work remotely, and 58 percent agreed that they would benefit from a quick and feasible way to meet over the Internet with colleagues; and 62 percent of people who currently do not have the ability to do their jobs off-site agreed they would like to be able to do so.
