Title: Hackers Able to Reroute Net Traffic

Author: Robertson, Jordan Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: San Francisco Chronicle, pE1(2) Publication Date: Feb 19, 2008

Hackers have learned how to reroute Internet traffic to fraudulent websites. The result is that people with computers that have been compromised are misdirected to incorrect websites without their knowledge. The Web could contain as many as 68,000 rogue servers. The hackers who hijack sites are attempting to steal personal information or may be trying to profit by directing users to advertising. The phony sites vary in quality from exceptionally convincing to amateurish and full of errors. The virus infects a computer and resets the victims settings directly web traffic not through the Internet service providers servers, but through the hackers. Generally, infected computers take users to incorrect sites only part of the time, leading many to believe that their computers are working as they should. The problem isnt entirely new, with hackers redirecting queries since 2003. Fixing the trouble is not difficult: users with infected computers need to run the latest scan with up to date software so that the virus can be found and the computers systems can be reset to their normal settings. Unfortunately, experts believe the problem is only going to become more widespread.
