Shavlik Technologies has scored big with its NetChk Project for all Microsoft Windows environments. It does well on three key criteria: strong change control, automation of the patch process, and the ability to use bandwidth wisely. From a single, easy-to-use console, it simplifies the management of critical security patches as well as watches for malware, spyware, and other unwanted applications. Plus, it does all of this without requiring the need to deploy agents, a huge benefit that applies to all capabilities including complete scanning, spyware discovery and remediation, and patch installation and removal. Users can set up automated results notifications and utilize its comprehensive and flexible reporting mechanism. In addition, NetChk offers virtualization support and a mechanism to throttle bandwidth. Although installation is easy, the initial network scan can take some doing. One thing NetChk lacks is the ability to natively delay copying of patches rather than having to use the Distribution Server, which controls when patches are distributed to target machines. Most enterprise-class Microsoft operating systems can be supported by NetChk, including Office, Exchange, and SharePoint.
