Title: A Leaner, Meaner Windows Server

Microsoft's Windows Server 2008 is well worth taking a look at for organizations that currently run Windows and even for those who do not. It boasts a networking enhancements that increase file-serving performance thanks to an overhauled TCP/IP stack and new SMB file-sharing service, the ability to deploy it in a stripped-down Server Core configuration, a more securable and modular web server, a new hypervisor-based virtualization functionality, and a number of management enhancements. Perhaps the most promising feature is the Hyper-V which provides support for hypervisor-based virtualization. It compares favorably with Citrix System's XenEnterprise virtualization products and VMware's ESX Server. The Receive Window Auto Tuning feature allows for efficiently sending large amounts of data at one time on high-latency links. The downsides of Windows Server 2008 are that the Server Core only supports a limited set of predetermined roles and it is not possible to install .Net Framework on Server Core instances. Windows Server 2008 is available in five versions (Standard, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition, Itanium-based edition, web server edition) as well as for x86, x86-64, and Intel Itanium 2 platforms.
