Title: Making 'Oslo' a Destination

Microsoft has two primary goals with regards to its new declarative modeling initiative: to better understand their software and to enable developers to write less code, something Bill Gates strongly believes in. Although Microsoft unveiled its broad service oriented architecture (SOA) strategy, called 'Oslo,' in 2007, the company is now starting work on its declarative programming language currently known as 'D' and referred to inhouse as Emacs.Net. D is a textual modeling language aimed at building components and applications for the Oslo repository. It is designed to be used by both domain experts and business professionals. Microsoft is also working on a new editing tool called Intellipad that is customizable and suitable for scripting. Intellipad can also support other declarative languages in addition to D. Oslo is part of Microsoft's vision for simplifying application design, development, management and deployment and represents a core set of technology investments, not to mention a large investment similar to the announcement of .Net years ago. Microsoft's broad-based foray into modeling will present an alternative to IBM's Rational modeling, which some see as too complex.
