A combination of well-publicized science and policy ('An Inconvenient Truth,' scientific documents issued by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 'The Economics of Climate Change: The Stern Review') has resulted in a marked increase in the news coverage of global warming in the past 15 to 18 months. Many steps are in place to move beyond just knowing the facts, starting with measuring and accounting for individual and collective 'carbon footprints' and enacting legislation to ensure global warming issues are taught in public schools (Global Warming Education Act and Climate Change Education Act). Technology tools can also be used to further understanding and prompt action. Social networks are a convenient and potentially effective way to convey messages, advertise events, and generate feasible solutions about global warming (Facebook has a group called 'Advancement of Technology as a Solution to Global Warming and Pollution') as are blogs such as those run by Environmental Defense (Climate 411) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (Switchboard). Comments, forums and message boards can also be utilized to inform visitors and may be especially useful to nonprofit organizations. Important coalitions include the Alliance for Climate Protection and the Apollo Alliance, which is pursuing clean energy technologies. Action is also taking place at the state, county and city levels including an online matrix developed by the Environmental Protection Agency that tracks how states are addressing climate change.
