Six Sigma, a metric-driven approach that attempts to reduce variation and ultimately improve process, has become closely aligned with the machine-vision industry. Machine vision is now highly regarded as a tool that can guarantee products with almost zero defects. Based on statistical thinking, Six Sigma acknowledges that all work is done through a process, all processes have variation, and the key to reducing variation is information. The Six Sigma approach is applied to the complexities of dispensing urethane epoxy to adhere car windshields. Using the Six Sigma process improvement program, it was determined that machine vision could be used to increase the frequency of data being collected in order to facilitate better process control in the extrusion of urethane beads. Six Sigma quality and statistical tools were used to develop the vision gauge. Six Sigma statistical metrics were then used to show capability. An important part of the Six Sigma program, and the first phase, is to define customer requirements. Six Sigma was originally developed in the mid-1980s by Motorola to eliminate defects and improve customer satisfaction.
