Title: Quants: Unlocking the Numbers

Author: Davenport, Thomas H; Harris, Jeanne G Article Type: Product Analysis

Chief Information Officers (CIOs) represent the quants (quantitative analysts) who have a big role in changing the future of their business enterprises. With the help of technology, CIOs interpret the business numbers that are exacted with the use of sophisticated mathematics, advanced software tools and algorithms. Employee behaviors can also be influenced to adopt particular actions designed by CIOs and their executive peers. An example is Irving Tyler's stint as CIO at Quaker Chemical Corp., which is now known as IMS Health. Tyler used e-mail alerts to inform the entire organization about the results of data analysis and reporting. He ensured that users were provided information to help them overcome problems and come up with the right solutions. Tyler also made sure that he consulted the organization's executives on important decisions and on various organizational challenges. At telecommunications company Verizon, CIO Shaygan Kheradpir is exposing employees to information to overcome its slow response to an analytical approach. A continuous scorecard form that focuses on different performance metrics is displayed at employees' PCs for 15 seconds. In this way, employees are encouraged to attend to issues that they see in the data. For specialized analytical experts, a home and reporting relationship could also be delivered by CIOs. This approach applies to Marriott, Procter and Gamble (P&G) and trucking firm Schneider National. For P&G, merging its analytical organizations for marketing, supply and operations chain and other functions makes a lot of sense.
