The market for electronic bikes is growing at a rate of approximately 25 percent per year, totaling over 18.5 million eBikes worldwide in 2007. An eBike's battery pack attaches to the seat bar and connects to the pedalworks and the drivetrain is motorized, so there's no need to pedal. Electronic power assists the rider uphill and through wind and eBikes can function at extreme temperatures and travel 25 miles if fully charged. The eBike has a high ratio of performance over cost and is also environmentally friendly. Germany's semiconductor company Infineon holds over 10 percent market share in microcontrollers and claims to be the market leader in eBike engineering. It produces the XC866 suite of microcontrollers which features a local interconnect network (LIN) for intra-bike sensor communications. The XC866 also enables power management, remote unlocking and e-brakes. Another model of eBike, Infineon's PeerLess, features an easily rechargeable removable battery. Next generation eBike technology will replace the sensor technology currently used in control algorithms with a new version featuring more memory, thereby allowing for increased functionality. Worldwide, Taiwan's Giant Manufacturing Ltd. is one of the largest manufacturers of regular and electronic bikes. In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Chinese government plans to ban all auto traffic within Beijing during the weeks prior to the games in order to minimize the city's already dangerous levels of air pollution. As a result, eBikes are expected to be a very popular product before and during this event.
