Despite advances in the ability of operating systems to run multiple applications, as users come to rely more and more on web browsers such as Mozilla's FireFox and Google to host on-line applications, they are coming to realize that in many cases browsers are such poor hosts that certain applications are affecting unrelated applications, leading to crashes, system resource issues and potential security breaches. For example, if FireFox hosts a flash ad on a website in one tab, the performance of an unrelated on-line word processing application in another window may be adversely affected. Google and SalesForce.com, in particular, should take steps to ensure that browsers like FireFox have the information they need to act as effective hosts of on-line applications.
