If you want the wireless convenience of your Apple iPod combined with the sound capacity of a speaker system, the Evolve speaker system from Griffin Technology may be the solution you have been looking for. While industry struggles to bring high-tech wireless devices to the market's hottest arena--the home living room--wireless music players are already establishing themselves. An iPod can easily be plugged into a home stereo to increase the range of available music, and a new family of docking devices are now being offered to convert the iPod into a wireless home stereo for casual listening or parties. The current leader in this technology is Sonos, a high end system requiring relatively elaborate setup, while more limited systems cost less. The Evolve system offers greater capability in this moderate price range. It has wireless speakers with a range of up to 150 feet, through walls and floors. The speakers operate for up to 11 hours at moderate volume without requiring a recharge, and fully recharge on the docking base station in about two hours, with protection against overcharging or undercharging. The base station measures about 16 inches across. All iPod models including the iPhone work with Evolve, and it can also be connected to other MP3 players and other audio devices. Griffin will be adding options for additional speakers and a separate charging plate. The Evolve system does have some limitations. The remote speakers have no volume control, and the song being played can only be monitored from the base station or via a remote. Earlier model iPods, lacking some current firmware, produced some operating bugs. Nevertheless, the Evolve system offers excellent sound quality and remote capability for a moderate price.
