Title: Yahoo Helping OpenID Plan, Which Might Simplify Web Log-ins

Author: Kopytoff, Verne Article Type: Product Analysis

OpenID, a program that aims to get rid of the cumbersome need of logging into different websites with unique passwords, received a huge boost with the announcement by Yahoo! Inc. that it would be testing the system in January. Yahoo! would be the largest backer of OpenID so far. LiveJournal, Smugmug, and Technorati are some of the smaller websites that are part of the OpenID alliance, and together they represent about 120 million accounts. Yahoo! alone will bring 248 million users. Yahoo! is trying to resurrect its business and to that end is extremely eager to cooperate with other websites, but Yahoo!'s support for OpenID is limited. Other companies share Yahoo!'s reluctance of sharing information amid security concerns and other concerns, and this may be what keeps OpenID from succeeding. So far, no websites have wanted to allow financial transactions through OpenID, citing the risk of fraud and potential liability concerns. In fact, Microsoft pushed a similar idea (first called Passport and now known as Windows Live ID) and met with limited success. OpenID is operated by the OpenID Foundation.
