Title: Laptop Feat Has Group Walking on Air

Author: Allison, Kevin Article Type: Product Analysis

The newest piece of technological wizardry from Apple Inc. is the MacBook Air, an ultra-thin laptop that was unveiled at Apple's annual MacWorld trade show in San Francisco. MacBook Air is just 0.76 inches wide, giving it the distinguished title of world's thinnest laptop computer. To make the laptop as thin as it is required the omission of a built-in optical drive, thus requiring users to rely on wireless connections to perform tasks traditionally done using CDs or DVDs, such as viewing films or downloading new software. The omission, of course, would push customers toward using Apple's proprietary iTunes software in order to access films or other media. This limitation could turn what would otherwise be potential customers away, but Apple is not the first company to offer a sub-notebook computer minus the drive. The MacBook incorporates some features taken from the success of other products, including a touch-sensitive interface taken from the iPhone and a miniaturized hard drive taken from the iPod. Analyst Gene Munster predicts the MacBook Air will increase Apple's Mac sales by 10 percent this year.
