As SAP launches their new on-demand offering, titled SAP Business ByDesign, a more important question is being formed by those who are analyzing the ERP market. Does anyone even hold an interest in this particular market? It does not seem that too many parties are interested in the SAP Business ByDesign product. By looking at precedents from the past, it is possible to look more closely at the ERP market to determine how businesses would feel about SAP's latest ERP product. Arena Software from Rockwell Automation offers a product lifecycle management application for their consumers and they are quite successful in their field, which puts them ahead of SAP in some ways. Arena Software, as a whole, has been careful to avoid some of the more common problems that other similar companies faced in the past. One example of this is illustrated by examining when other product lifecycle management vendors would battle when it came to the level of engineering and design. Arena focuses on battling on the level of collaboration. Many of their customers do not even use SAP or Oracle. As a result, SAP's success will depend largely on whether or not they can compete with the success of Arena Software and help to promote the usefulness of SAP Business ByDesign, if in fact there is a demand for it. If SAP is unable to generate interest in their company and their new SAP Business ByDesign product, it is unlikely that Arena software will fail in their pursuit to supply consumers with products, applications and services that buyers really do want.
