Title: E-Commerce's New Dimension

The future of e-commerce is expected to be dominated by 3D technology. Retailers are likely to offer a shopping experience that exceeds that of brick-and-mortar stores. Online bookstores, for instance, made a breakthrough when Amazon.com introduced 'Search Inside The Book,' allowing prospective shoppers to flip through books to know if they are worth buying. Another in-store experience that online retailers are trying to replicate is the impulse buying that happens when shoppers casually scan store merchandise. With 3D environments, sellers may achieve the same effect. Three-dimensional e-commerce could change the rules of online retailing. With faster computers and better bandwidth, it is becoming easier to adopt a 3D retail environment. Instead of thumbnail images, online shoppers could be browsing through piles of visual information. The essence of search results would also be affected. Retailers, big and small, would be on equal footing as a result as it would not matter if search results favor one retailer over another. In a 3D environment, relevance and sales could be achieved by a retailer that only ranks 11th or 12th in the usual search results. A three-dimensional environment also affords the benefit of putting dimensions and shapes in a more concrete manner. This helps the buyer to determine if an item is a fitting purchase.
