Title: IBM Gains Storage Guru in XIV Deal

Whether the greater gain was the more advanced storage system or the man with 18 storage system patents, IBM made a good deal when it bought XIV. For a reported $300, IBM not only got XIV's two-year-old Nextra architecture, which is a highly scalable and reliable storage system, but it also got XIV Chairman Moshe Yanai, the man who designed and built the first Symmetrix system for EMC (now called the DMX series). Yanai is known as powerful and innovative leader in the data storage market and has an unmatched reputation. He will become part of IBM's System Storage business unit, part of the IBM Systems and Technology Group, as will XIV's roughly fifty other employees. Yanai's patents are all key ingredients in EMC's intellectual property. XIVs Nextra architecture uses standard technology and a Linux-based operating system. It not only can scale dynamically and heal itself, but it can also self-tune for optimum performance. Because it is cheap, scalable, and easy to manage, the system is ideal for the storage of rich digital content or emerging workloads like surveillance.
