Verizon Wireless will allow third-party applications and devices into its network. The move will make the carrier the first to provide cellular consumers the freedom to select the application and device they want to use. Verizon Wireless, the second-biggest telecommunications company in the U.S., will start an initiative called Any App, Any Device in 2008. Under the initiative, phone and other mobile companies can use Verizon Wireless network when they pass the minimum standards. Verizon Wireless made the announcement weeks after Google informed the public of its intention to develop an operating system that will host different consumer devices and applications. The decision of Verizon Wireless will allow non-phone devices such as cameras and gaming systems to tap on the carrier's cellular network. Some industry analysts want to know how much of Verizon Wireless' systems will be opened and how much consumers will have to pay ultimately. Analysts are also wondering whether Verizon Wireless is just making a public relations tactic. It remains to be seen soon how Verizon Wireless will certify devices and applications for its systems. The main focus will be whether the company's testing requirements can develop an open network. Meanwhile, other analysts are urging government to support openness in the mobile industry. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin noted that the decision of Google and Verizon Wireless is in line with the agency's thrust for an open wireless setting.
