Although Futurama, an adult cartoon based on the staff of an interstellar package delivery service, was cancelled by Fox five years ago, season number five is coming out on DVD and will air on Comedy Central in 2008. The creators of Futurama, David X. Cohen and Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons), are making four DVDs of new material, and the features will then be divided into 16 half-hour episodes. Set in the year 3000, Futurama was never a mass market success and instead appealed to science fiction fans and science-minded individuals who became infatuated with the shows geeky comedy, hidden clues, and encrypted codes decipherable by a tricky alien alphabet. The comedic style of Futurama was similar to The Simpsons in that a single joke could blossom into an increasingly hilarious cluster of gags. The show had a lot of macabre twists which made Fox worry and eventually pull the show. Reruns began airing on Cartoon Network in 2003, and were greeted with wild enthusiasm. Cohen credits DVD sales as the force behind Futuramas return.
