With the increased threat of data breaches, companies are starting to embrace encryption as a pillar of their security infrastructures. In fact, an April survey by Forrester Research showed that stepping up encryption was the top short-term data-security initiative for 62 percent of respondents. In addition to possible data breaches are the recent mandates and regulations that are making companies legally responsible for losing data. Luckily, data encryption is getting less expensive and easier to use, and advances are being made that will help companies embrace the technology. Due to continuing consolidation, it is more and more common to find encryption as part of an existing platform rather than a stand-alone offering. For example, IronPort bought e-mail encryption vendor PostX, McAfee bought hard-drive and file-encryption maker SafeBoot, and Check Point Software bought Pointsec Mobile Technologies, a provider of data encryption devices. In addition, venture capitalists are putting money behind encryption companies, such as Winblad Venture Partners who gave $12 million to Voltage Security. Start-up Venafi has attracted $20 million in venture capital and 2factor received $1.6 million to fund development of its two-factor, continuous user-authentication and data encryption.
