Title: Calling All Bloggers: Here's a Reading Challenge

Author: O'Neill, Jill Article Type: Product Analysis

Reading challenges, traditionally used to encourage young people to read more, may also be a useful tool for bloggers to build a community. Reading challenges may also increase traffic to participants' blogs and serve as a viral marketing tool for the publishing industry. The blog 'A Novel Challenge' serves as a clearinghouse for reading challenges. An initiating blogger sets up the rules, timeframe, and any prizes or awards for completion, and also provides some graphic to mark her participation on her blog. The number of those participating, and the timeframe for the challenges varies, with some having more than 100 participants. Some challenges generate a group blog, and even those without a blog of their own can add commentary using Google's Blogger software. Such challenges generate publicity for worthy titles that may have fallen below the radar. Reading challenges also offer some advantages over traditional book clubs. For example, participants with busy schedules do not need to attend meetings. Also, everyone does not need to read the same book making challenges more flexible. Readers' feedback can benefit librarians, who could also consider sponsoring a challenge. Some authors and publishers have offered free copies of books as prizes for those who complete the challenges, and small publishers or academic presses can offer discounts to participants.
