Due to an increase in tne number of people who are losing their laptops, 35 states have mandated that notification needs to be given to individuals when their personal information has been compromised by loss, theft or other means. Though the public continues to be wary of such data breaches, encryption advancements have continued, partly due to the federal government. Devices, specifically mobile ones, which contain sensitive data and information, are required to be encrypted, which would help to safeguard personal and sensitive information. Another key advancement is the ability to erase data from a specific device remotely. This way, if data is compromised through loss or theft, it can be deleted and therefore more appropriately safeguarded. While there is no one specific cure-all encryption, the government uses ten different ones in order to safeguard their information. If such a device goes missing, it is important that the individual be able to prove that the data was actually encrypted, otherwise the owner, be it an individual or a company, was going against the federally mandated objective. However, this is easy because all centrally managed encryption suites are able to offer that protection and evidence. It is important to remember that successful security begins with comprehensive policies. If individuals do not understand what they need to do to safeguard and protect data, they are far less likely to accomplish the objective of protecting their sensitive data.
