Many individuals and companies have long been interested in having a quantum computer. This is because a quantum computer would be able to perform certain tasks at a rate that would make even the quickest of today's computers look painfully slow and antiquated. For the individuals who have spent time trying to create such a computer, quantum dots are believed to have the necessary and desired capabilities to power these potential next-generation super computers. Quantum computers would receive a welcome home in such arenas as national security. For example, it is believed that once it is developed, a quantum computer would be able to operate light years ahead of and faster than contemporary computers. Even more, these quantum computers are expected to be just a fraction of the size of today's computers. They are expected to be able to construct and, conversely, decipher complex, encrypted codes that would take a great deal of time for today's computers to resolve. Meanwhile, this fast technology could also be applied to such areas as credit card protection and other similar security applications. Recent tests have confirmed that high-performance lasers were not even necessary in the tests that had been performed using them. This is noteworthy because in today's uses, lasers are used in order to drive a quantum dot. Still, it is expected that it could take up to another decade before quantum dot computers would be finalized.
