Title: Watching Wimax

There is an overwhelming atmosphere surrounding WiMAX recently. Anything that can be credited to an access technology, such as broadband anywhere, can be credited to WiMAX. Advocates of WiMAX want us to believe that WiMAX can do everything, the latest feat of which is its ability to be the vehicle for supplying next-generation TV services. That idea may not be too outlandish, as TV and video services obviously have a place in the new WiMAX business model, which is being embraced as the traditional Internet mobile. Customers will use the WiMAX broadband connection as they would use any fixed broadband pipe. What WiMAX offers that cellular does not is a bountiful spectrum. WiMAX is not only being mentioned as the way to deliver TV to the small screen of a laptop or handheld device, but also as a full-fledged video delivery technology to the home through a set-top box, instead of the traditional broadcast, cable, and satellite pipes. A WiMAX network can be configured to deliver the proper video to the proper device, although the device landscape for WiMAX will differ considerably from 3G. WiMAX can support high-capacity video streams, but WiMAX is not the most efficient way to deliver multichannel video because video occupies a tremendous amount of bandwidth. The role for WiMAX in TV is to augment the technology and to supply premium video-on-demand (VOD) and interactive TV services rather than core TV content. Yet WiMAX vendors are attempting to split the difference between unicast and broadcast by creating hybrid multicast technologies that work in both unicast and broadcast modes. One warning concerning WiMAX multicasting is that the content provider or customer will need the operator to do everything. But WiMAX can potentially be the delivery mechanism for all types of devices.
