Facebook is trying to mature. After receiving $240 million from Microsoft for a small stake in the company, Facebook is now trying to attract older consumers. At the CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2007 convention in San Francisco, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and Research In Motion (RIM) co-chief executive Mike Lazaridis introduced a mobile version of the social-networking site Facebook that is designed for BlackBerry users. 'Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones' is a free download from facebook.com that allows BlackBerry users to access the Facebook site, view updates and profiles, and upload notes and pictures to their own pages. The partnership joins two historically different user groups that have started to come together in recent years. With 10.5 million customers, BlackBerry maker RIM traditionally has courted the business crowd with its e-mail-focused smart phone. With 49 million users, Facebook started out in 2004 as a social-networking site for college students. The union pinpoints how much Facebook wants to entice older members and how much RIM wants to attract a younger market. Facebook has grown quickly by focusing its attention on business users, while BlackBerry has accelerated its sales by introducing more consumer-focused phones. Lazaridis explained that combining BlackBerry technology and Facebook networking will 'provide a real-time experience away from the desktop.' Moskovitz said the partnership meets the increasing demands of Facebook users, and illustrates Facebook's wish to expand into the mobile market, which is 'the next frontier in social networking.'
