Active radio frequency ID transmitters are currently being used in order to identify and track vehicles in such areas as the Port of Oakland. The port was looking for a technology system that would register trucks and their drivers and inform the staff of who was in the port at any specific time. In many areas this technology is being adopted because of the security that these tracking systems allow. Recently, it has been determined that more than 175 organizations around the world rely on this technology to increase safety in their environments. Security guards on their own can only do so much in verifying drivers licenses in crowded facilities. This alternate system, however, can identify a truck and the driver in approximately 30 seconds. At the same time, the technology is able to match the truck and driver with specific appointment schedules in order to coordinate the flow of traffic and facilitate deliveries throughout the port area. Not only is the technology appreciated by staff members, but truck drivers also appreciate it because it speeds them through their checkpoints and security stations. This makes better use of the time that the drivers have and their tight schedules. However, some privacy advocates maintain that the constant surveillance of these drivers can and may be used to violate personal privacy laws. Many observers believe that the true benefits of the technology will only be realized after it is integrated with some type of management system.
