Title: XML Tool Jumps on Mashup Bandwagon

Author: Connolly, P J Article Type: Review

Advanced Data Access Technologies (ADAT) has finally made a public beta available of its SQLfX hierarchical processing software. SQLfX uses the 'left outer join' operator of structured query language (SQL) to bring two hierarchical extensible markup language (XML) structures together, based on their lowest common ancestor. Because it implements a hierarchical display that allows multileg global views, it is particularly suitable for mashups of hierarchical data, or any-to-any structure transformations. The final version will include an application binary interface (API) with procedural and nonprocedural, relational and XML interfaces. ADATs goal is to completely insulate the SQL developer from any XML and to keep things ANSI-standard and nonprocedural. SQLfX, which is implemented as Java code and runs on Linux, Mac OS X, Unix and Windows, is being touted as an alternative to XML shredding and Xquery, which ADAT claims requires more explicit knowledge of data structure and becomes brittle when working with multileg data structures. Originally slated for release in 2005, it proved more difficult to process XML data by implementing SQL on top. The beta is available for download at www.adatinc.com.
