Forty- and fifty-something professionals who are joining Facebook may find the mashup of friends and business a little unnerving. A year after getting rid of its 'students' only policy, Facebook has become a huge social networking site with a subgroup composed of professionals. Indeed, Facebook's newfound status as the social network a middle-aged professional can join without seeming weird has given the company months of coverage and word-of-mouth advertising. Many under-40 professionals are joining Facebook reluctantly because the site is now a mashup of MySpace and LinkedIn. These subgroups, not to mention those in their 20s and 30s, are less than pleased about the professionalization of their Facebook profile. One friend's list should be a mix of people from all walks of life, from rock musicians to heads of major companies. But there are instances when one is uncomfortable mixing their friends. MySpace keeps on attracting a geometrically bigger crowd than Facebook. MySpace does not lack real-job audience, but it saw itself as a cultural phenomenon before the throng of adult members joined in. By the time the grown-ups joined, MySpace had become a social networking site, with the young crowd accounting for the bulk of its members. The main objectives of the young crowd joining MySpace are music and hooking up. The vibe of MySpace was fully in place by the time the mainstream started joining, thus the flood of articles discussing the etiquette of handling one boss's friend request took place only when Facebook reached its zenith with the professional crowd.
