Mobile location-based service (LBS) developers are aiming to differentiate themselves by delivering applications beyond basic map and driving directions. TeleNav, which has partnership deals with several wireless service carriers, is looking to add more lifestyle-based content to its offerings. TeleNav provides the application for Sprint Nextels Navigation service, which offers features for locating Wi-Fi hot spots, parking lots and prices for nearby gas stations. The service also automatically checks traffic situations along major roads every five minutes, and even recommends a detour. TeleNav and competitor Telmap are also pursuing adding predictive traffic data to their applications, giving drivers an idea of what the traffic situation would be like for a specific direction if no current information is available. While traffic and weather information are natural contents in navigation applications, TeleNav and TelMap are working to expand their offerings to include less obvious features, such as user reviews. TeleNav has partnered with Yelp.com, a forum much like Craigslist where members give their reviews to just about everything, from the most popular clubs to the top dentists. A messaging feature is also being added to navigation. Applications aimed at enterprise users are adding a friend-finding feature that gives alerts when buddies are near and allows users to send messages if they want to get in touch. TelMaps offering features a location-sharing capability that transmits specific locations thru text messaging.
