Title: U.S. Telcos Bet on Video Quality

Telecommunication companies in the U.S. are counting on video quality to improve their chances in competing against cable operators in the TV markets. It becomes more challenging for telcos as home electronics become more affordable and advanced. High-definition TVs (HDTVs), for instance, are becoming commonplace in households. Because of this, telcos are forced to increase their bandwidth capabilities. Telcos are responsible for maintaining the quality of the proprietary networks transmitting bits to the sites of the homes, as well as the second network inside the homes. SureWest Communications, a northern California-based CLEC, lays fiber directly within the home, thus eliminating last-loop problems. Other telcos adopted the same approach, but some decided on a different method to cut capital expenditure. This approach creates further quality assurance on the fiber that connects the DSLAM to the customers residence. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) has been adopted by Verizon for its FiOS service. AT&T deployed the fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) technology for its U-verse offering. For its home network investment, Verizon turned to the so-called low-end enterprise-class router. This approach utilizes the coaxiable cable installed in the home, allowing video to take precedence over best-effort traffic. It also eliminates the use of truck rolls. Verizon currently offers low-end enterprise-class router for free, but will likely offer it as a paid service once its FiOS service stabilizes. AT&Ts home network investment includes custom software on the set-top box and custom firmware on the home gateway. This approach also lets operators regulate traffic flow. Another way of monitoring the quality of the home network is the use of the DSL Forums TR69 network monitoring tool.
