Many large computer companies are marketing cheaper high performance gaming PCs to a mass audience. Hewlett-Packard recently launched the Blackbird 002 desktop PC, which will cost half the price of a high-end gaming PC. Gateway is also launching a gaming PC, the FX540, and will then follow it with notebooks for gaming enthusiasts. Toshiba Corp. launched the Satellite x205 series of notebooks, and Dell Inc. launched the XPS 720 gaming desktop. Previously, very high speed PCs with enhanced graphics capabilities were marketed at very high prices to a small group of mostly male, tech-savvy gamers, who were willing to pay high prices. More women are now interested in gaming but they are not interested in paying exorbitant prices for their gaming systems. Many point to the growing number of games that appeal to women and girls, such as multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft, to explain this increase in interest. Interest in PC gaming is growing in popularity generally, and with half of Americans playing electronic games each week, and 29 percent of those who play doing so on a PC. Sales of PC games are expected to nearly double by 2012, and gaming PC sales are expected to grow by nearly 40 percent this year. Also, the margins for gaming PCs are higher than for regular PCs. In addition to the new cheaper offering, many PC companies will continue to offer their expensive, high performance models as well.
