Zend Technologies has launched Zend Framework 1.0, a free, open-source software that is designed to make PHP more suitable for corporate development processes. Zend hopes the framework will expedite the process of software development and at the same time make it easier to comply with best practices when developing PHP applications. Released in early July 2007, Zend Framework is claimed to be a huge productivity booster. Zend is banking on the modularity and reusability of the code inside the framework to attract enterprise users. Strong focus was placed on integrating web services tooling and support into Zend Framework because the company recognizes that improving PHP is a challenge, particularly in terms of speed and ease of development. Zend teamed up with Microsoft, Google and other outside web services companies to establish customized support for common services. Zend is aware that the new features added on Zend Framework alone will not spur adoption. Zend Framework's ability to be utilized in pieces is what will drive its popularity. Different components of the whole can be assigned to webpages with little work, without the necessity of stuffing the whole framework into the webpage being revised. An example of a component that can be utilized separately from the Zend Framework is the company's PHP port of Apache Lucene, a site search platform that was initially written in Java.
