Internet protocol television (IPTV) still has a number of issues to address before the service is offered to the mass market. How to manage the bandwidth is a top concern, considering the megabits-per-second requirement of every new user. Traffic management affects the video's quality, which in turn affects the user experience and business. IPTV players need to be cautious in maintaining high-definition quality when they shift to MPEG4 from MPEG2 technology. In terms of bandwidth, tradeoffs are expected to be made to ensure great picture quality. Smaller telco companies, meanwhile, have to rely on the National Rural Telephone Cooperative or NRTC to access an end-to-end service that features programming and at the same time a content-only version, and have their own IPTV transport and delivery systems. Scalability is an issue when activity increases. Such a problem introduces new challenges at the customer level, including customer service and support. Telcos are expected to have problems when their responsiveness is affected as subscribers increase. A distributed system instead of a centralized one is an option for service providers to push some processing capability closer to the edge. Lastly, service providers must have the ability to say no to clients and identify packets to drop to overcome challenges in the IPVT market. It is important for providers to know when their clients are experiencing good or bad service.
